A Journey in Meaning Making through Semantic Pairing and Gameplay

I crafted a prototype using ChatGPT, titled "Spiders & Death", aimed at exposing players to Suomi verb conjugations. The game challenges players to develop a keen sense of pattern recognition in conjugating verbs correctly. However, if players make repeated mistakes, Death steps in with an explanation. This concept was born out of the frustration of receiving explanations prematurely, hindering the process of discovering patterns independently. The motivation behind this project is to encourage players to decipher patterns before Death intervenes.

The prototype leverages language bites to immerse players in grammar and vocabulary through an iterative pattern-matching process. Players encounter micro sentences and respond by providing the appropriate pronoun matching the conjugated verb. This enhances word awareness, allowing players to improve their perception through predictive processes and enhancing their ability to identify words within a contextual framework.

Array of Sentences

I enlisted ChatGPT to generate a myriad of sensible sentences, resulting in approximately 1000 entries in the array. This dataset should provide ample material for human entrainment. My hypothesis is that with enough combinations of verbs and nouns that make sense and sufficient overlap between sentences, the human brain can establish connections and discern patterns effectively, enabling language acquisition. These combinations, known as semantic pairings, play a crucial role in conveying specific meanings or concepts. For example, the pairing of "read" and "book" forms a semantic unit representing the action of engaging in reading a book. By incorporating diverse semantic pairings into the sentences, we aim to provide players with a rich and varied linguistic experience conducive to language learning.

If I can uncover the essence of this linguistic knowledge, it could serve as a robust foundation for individuals to internalise and swiftly comprehend daily language use. People should be able to accomplish a great deal with a vocabulary of 2000 words. The challenge lies in combining and understanding them comprehensively in various contexts with others.

Language Nuggets

By utilising a predefined core set of sentences, we can construct what I term a "language nugget" — a densely packed corpus furnishing players with sufficient vocabulary for most everyday scenarios. Players will familiarise themselves with short sentences structured as (subject+)verb+object. Subsequently, more intricate narratives can be formulated from the same corpus, with grammar nuances (prepositions and case endings) internalised through pattern recognition. This is because players have already absorbed basic vocabulary sets and possess a degree of understanding of their meanings. The ensuing challenge involves developing more intricate processes of meaning-making when reading or listening to longer sentences and complex narratives.

Perceptive and Predictive Listening

Integrating listening as another modality would prove beneficial in future iterations. By integrating auditory input, players can cultivate predictive processes that facilitate word identification within conversations or narrations. This auditory exposure enhances players' awareness of specific words, enabling them to recognize and comprehend them more readily. Moreover, the inclusion of complex narratives constructed from the existing corpus further refines and amplifies players' word perception through predictive processing. Through active engagement with spoken language, players develop a multifaceted understanding of vocabulary usage and sentence structure, thereby enriching their overall language learning experience.

In conclusion, this project aims to offer an engaging language learning experience that enables players to internalize essential vocabulary and grammar autonomously. By prioritizing pattern recognition over explicit instruction, it leverages the innate human capacity for language acquisition. This approach not only enhances individual language skills but also illuminates the efficacy of autonomous language learning methods, providing learners with the tools and experiences needed to awaken their inherent language learning abilities.
