You've been scrolling for what has been hours. Laying in bed, staring at the endless stream of thought from people far away. They all seem so bright, full of life and full of wisdom, well some of them. The rest try to drag you into their trigger wars, but no you're too smart for that. Or are you? Scrolling through the endless stream of thoughts from people who don't have any idea who you are.

You're also probably pretty exhausted. Everyday there is always someone or something that demands your attention, decision or explanation. Your fridge is getting empty, but you're so tired and have no energy for anything at all, so you'll blow you're already limited budget and order in.

Our phones trap us in an endless cycle of attention seeking behaviour that goes nowhere. Never are we satisfied nor satiated from our digital experiences. Relationships are so detached and superficial, yet demanding all the same. There is so much pressure to perform. The emotional cognitive demands from digital devices is never ending, or is it?

I've been thinking about how we can reclaim more of our time away from phones, and how to get our devices to help us get off our phones. Yes I realise the dichotomy, but I don't think our devices our bad, but the way we use them can be harmful. I want to make apps that direct our attention away from our phones, so that every time we look at a screen, it encourages us to look around us and be excited about the world we live in.

I INTRODUCE ANTI-ROT

This is just a little prototype for an idea to help me cope with decision fatigue and isolation. I made it in Codepen.io, so you can fork it and make your own version.

Pick six easy activities that you know uplifts your mood, I've picked:

  • go for a walk

  • meet up with a friend

  • do more language practice

  • play a boardgame

  • go to the gym

  • find a geocache

Then every time I find myself scrolling during the day, I will play this game. In the prototype you tap on the spin button and the wheel decides for you. You can also play this with a die. Just give a number to each activity.

I made this game to solve several problems:

  • I spend too much time on my phone

  • I get tired from making every decision all the time

  • I feel isolated and there is a severe lack of spontaneity in my life

  • I need a bit more motivation to do things

I don't think I am the only one struggling with these things. If you find ANIT-ROT useful and want to share your experience with me, you can drop me a note in the About page or tap on the Contact link below.
